Linen is made from flax. Linen is one of the most ecological plant fibers, even more compared to
cotton, because this one is cultivated intensively with its ecological consequences. However,
flax produce one harvest in four years, and it must be lain fallow another four years to cultivate
again.
Linen clothes are stronger than cotton ones, but also more rigid and not so flexible. Its surface
is plain, bright, and cold to the touch.
Linen was first used by the ancient Egyptians (probably its name is originated by the Egyptian word linum), where it was a symbol of purity becouse of its white colour. That is why Egyptians used not only for clothing and household articles but also in religious practices and for shrouds (many Egyptian mummies are wrapped in linen).
